Studious Sequoyah Sea Otter is one of six grade level curriculum manuals that emphasizes academic achievement by examining the work habits of an animal of nature. The fifth grade program focuses on the sea otter as an animal in nature that survives by using the same skills that students need to make the most of their school experience. Each animal is named after an historical figure who has implemented and achieved success through sound work ethics. The curriculum consists of six lesson plans:

• The first four lessons include a discussion of the sea otter’s work characteristics as related to the school work habits of being prepared, good homework habits, listening and paying attention, and time management.

• The fifth lesson highlights a work ethic demonstrated by the historical figure Sequoyah and makes a connection to student usage in daily learning activities.

• The last lesson presents an opportunity to practice, discuss, and review the study skills objectives.

Hands-on activities and class discussions are included to provide real-world experiences. Puppets can also be used to make the program more interesting.

In addition to the fifth-grade program the other animals and their corresponding grades are as follows:

Quiet Earhart Owl (Kindergarten) Paying Attention P. Revere Penguin (First) GWC Checking Chipmunk (Second) Hard Working Helen K. Honeybee (Third) Willing Worker Wilma Whale (Fourth)

Learning good work habits is an important part of becoming a responsible, contributing member of society. By exploring nature, animals and their work examples, students can practice and incorporate these characteristics into daily experiences.

Also available is a Sea Otter Puppet which can be used to enhance the presentations. This product can be purchased as a single unit or as a complete K-5 set with or without puppets.
