Creatures of Character is a curriculum that will teach children character traits in ways they will really remember.
First, each character trait is taught for four sessions. This format reinforces the trait being taught in a consistent manner over a short period of time. Secondly, each character trait is related to an animal that uses the same trait in its everyday living. Children relate well to animals, making this a relevant approach. By pairing animals and desirable character traits, this program provides an effective way to teach children character education.
The K-1 module comes packaged in a box that contains the Creatures of Character Leader's Manual K-1, three cassette tapes with recordings of the stories, sticker samples and template, three Eagle Acts Posters, I’m A Fair-Feathered Friend Poster, and Pat Bat Cards. The animals and their traits are: Justice Miriam B. Eagle--Fairness, Albert B. Lion--Courage, Caring Carol Pelican--Caring, Citizen Rachel Raccoon--Citizenship, Respectful Pat Bat--Respect, and Bertram V. Beaver--Responsibility. Accompanying puppets are available.
By purchasing all three modules, schools can have a character-education program with a spiral effect by teaching the same animals/character traits in kindergarten as are taught in grades 2 and 4 and repeating the same format for grades 1, 3, and 5. By doing this, the students at the first level are introduced to the animal and the character trait, and when they are presented with the same animal and character trait again in the other grades, the concepts presented earlier are reinforced and broadened.
